Three related teacher demonstrations: Jello Light Pipe, RGB Light Color Mixing, Colored Filters Remove Light.

Teaching & key ideas

1. Jello Light Pipe Materials: Clear gelatin strip; bright LED flashlight What you do: Shine light into one end of a curved gelatin strip. What students see: Light follows the bend instead of traveling straight out. Question: Why can light follow a curve? 2. RGB Light Color Mixing Materials: Red, green, blue LED flashlights; white screen What you do: Overlap colored beams in different combinations. What students see: Red+green, green+blue, and all three produce new light colors including white. Question: What color appears when all three overlap? 3. Colored Filters Remove Light Materials: Colored transparent filters; white light; colored objects What you do: Look through filters or stack two colors. What students see: Some object colors darken or disappear. Question: Does a filter add color or remove light?
