Teaching & key ideas

1. Pinhole Camera Image Materials: Dark box/tube with tiny hole; translucent screen What you do: Aim toward a bright scene or lamp. What students see: An upside-down image appears on the screen. Question: Why is the image upside down? 2. Benham Disk Color Illusion Materials: Printed black-and-white Benham disk; spinner What you do: Spin the black-and-white pattern. What students see: Faint colors may appear even though the disk has no colored ink. Question: Are the colors really printed there? 3. Afterimage Flag Materials: High-contrast false-color flag image; white screen What you do: Stare briefly at image, then look at white space. What students see: Complementary colors appear as an afterimage. Question: Why do new colors appear after the picture is gone?
