Teaching & key ideas

1. Moiré Motion Patterns Materials: Two transparent line/grating sheets What you do: Slide or rotate one pattern over the other. What students see: Large waves and apparent motion appear. Question: Where did the big moving pattern come from? 2. Anamorphic Cylinder Mirror Materials: Printed distorted image; reflective cylinder What you do: Place cylinder on center of printed pattern. What students see: A normal image appears in the curved reflection. Question: Which image is 'real': the paper or the reflection? 3. Crookes Radiometer Spins in Light Materials: Crookes radiometer; bright lamp/sunlight What you do: Move radiometer between dim and bright light. What students see: Vanes spin faster in bright light. Question: Is light pushing the black side directly?
