1. Pepper Runs from Soap Materials: Water; shallow dish; pepper; dish soap; swab What you do: Sprinkle pepper on water and touch soap to the center. What students see: Pepper races away from the soap. Question: Is the soap touching every piece of pepper? 2. Floating Paper Clip Materials: Bowl of water; paper clip; tissue What you do: Gently lower a paper clip flat onto the water. What students see: The metal clip floats. Question: Why can heavy metal stay on top? 3. Walking Water Materials: 3 cups; colored water; paper towels What you do: Connect full and empty cups with folded paper towels. What students see: Colored water climbs and moves into the empty cup. Question: How can water climb upward?
