Teaching & key ideas

1. Falling Slinky Surprise Materials: Large slinky What you do: Hold it stretched vertically and release the top. What students see: The bottom hangs still briefly. Question: Why doesn't the bottom fall right away? 2. Rice Dances on a Drum Materials: Bowl/can; stretched plastic wrap; rice; speaker/voice What you do: Place rice on membrane and make a loud low sound nearby. What students see: Rice jumps and dances. Question: Can sound move things? 3. Spoon Gong Materials: Metal spoon; string What you do: Tie string to spoon, wrap ends around fingers, place fingers near ears, tap spoon. What students see: A small spoon sounds like a huge bell. Question: Why does it sound louder through the string?
