Balloon Rocket

Three related teacher demonstrations: Balloon Rocket, Water Beads Up on Wax Paper, Warm-Bottle Balloon Inflation.

Teaching & key ideas

1. Balloon Rocket Materials: Balloon; straw; string; tape What you do: Release inflated balloon attached to straw on a taut line. What students see: Balloon races down the line. Question: Which way is the air going? 2. Water Beads Up on Wax Paper Materials: Wax paper; dropper; water What you do: Place drops and push them together/apart. What students see: Water forms rounded beads instead of spreading flat. Question: Why is the drop round? 3. Warm-Bottle Balloon Inflation Materials: Empty plastic bottle; balloon; bowls of warm and cold water What you do: Put balloon over bottle; move bottle between warm and cold water. What students see: Balloon inflates/deflates without blowing. Question: What changed inside the bottle?
