Three related teacher demonstrations: Dancing Raisins, Dry-Erase Drawing Floats, Mystery Orange: Peel On vs Off.

Teaching & key ideas

1. Dancing Raisins Materials: Clear cup; carbonated water; raisins What you do: Drop raisins into fresh carbonated water. What students see: Raisins repeatedly rise and sink. Question: What is making the raisins go up? 2. Dry-Erase Drawing Floats Materials: Smooth plate/spoon; dry-erase marker; water What you do: Draw, let dry, then slowly add water. What students see: The drawing lifts off and floats. Question: How can a drawing peel off in one piece? 3. Mystery Orange: Peel On vs Off Materials: 2 oranges; water tub What you do: Float whole orange, then peeled orange. What students see: Whole orange floats while peeled one sinks. Question: Did removing something make it heavier or denser?
